Kate Shea is a designer maker who's favourite material is clay. The love of this material started early in her life and has continued to keep her enthralled for over 30 years.
She is a designer maker and creates figurative sculptures mainly in porcelain. Her practice-based research looks at kinetic sculpture and automata in human & animal forms. She explores fragility, strength and interaction through movement.
In 1996 Kate graduated from Central Saint Martin's College of Art and Design with a First Class degree in Ceramic Design. Then, working from Cockpit Arts in London, she sold her work internationally through galleries and by commission.
Amongst a wealth of different experiences, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJ9YVfl7IAI see if you can spot her..?)
Kate has been able to indulge in her other passion, education. Currently she is a Lecturer on the Design Crafts Degree at De Montfort University in Leicester, specialising in Ceramics. Through teaching, Kate is able to share her love for the material and delights in instilling her passion in others.
In recent years, motherhood and a focus on teaching, has seen a lull in Kate's own practice. In launching this portfolio she has taken a forward step in re-establishing her own practice and has is currently making work for exhibition.
